Welcome
to my website…..
I am a saxophone and flute player, currently
living in
York
. I have been working as a
professional musician for about 15 years now.
I
was born in York and lived in
London for ten years. I moved there
initially to study in Fine Art, Painting and began performing in
venues in and around London after graduating.
As
my interest in jazz grew I immersed myself in the gig scene and
seized the opportunity to travel to
Antigua for 6 months with a seven piece band
playing jazz, calypso, reggae and soul music. That was my first
taste of life as a full-time musician on the road!
Later,
I entered the "Young Jazz Musician" competition and got runner- up.
I had the opportunity to play with a professional Jazz band on
television in front of a large audience. I also gigged regularly
with two of my own bands, a jazz-funk quartet and a "straight ahead"
jazz quintet-sextet. In 1995 I worked in a salsa band called
"Pachanga". We played regularly in
London
's night clubs for over four
years.
Whilst in London I toured with The Sahara jazz quartet as
part of the LiveMusicNow scheme where we were running workshops and
gigging throughout the UK as well as doing our own gigs at
the London Jazz Festival and other venues in London.
I
have also worked as a session musician, recording for artists and
bands on labels such as Good Looking Records, Black Beard, Nuphonic
Records, One Note, Mr. Bongo, Naim and 33 Records. I’ve performed at venues and festivals in Colorado, Los Angeles, New York,
San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans as well as cities in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Caribbean. I’ve worked with many diverse bands
and musicians such as Juan Martin, Nightmares on Wax, Yam Who?, The
New Mastersounds, Nicolas Meier, Robin Banerjee and Evelyn
Glennie.
As
a jazz saxophonist I've always enjoyed performing in larger
ensembles and have played frequently in swing bands and orchestras
in theatre shows.
As a sideline to composing
contemporary jazz, I’ve
been commissioned to write scores for film and television and I
studied film music composition at Kensington College in
2002.
I
have my own group which I write for and have recorded two albums
called Stretch (2005) and Small Creature (2008). The latest
recording was recently released on the 33Records label and features
Jamil Sheriff, Zoltan Dekany and Laurent Robin.
